IN: Poll shows strong support for immigration bill

Poll shows strong support for immigration bill

    Post-Tribune
    February 13, 2011

Debate is heating up in Northwest Indiana now that a bill meant to crack down on illegal immigration got the "go-ahead" from a state Senate committee.

Last week, the Senate Pensions and Labor Committee passed a measure with an 8-1 vote with Sen. Karen Tallian, D-Portage, casting the sole opposing vote.

The bill must also get the nod from the Senate Appropriations Committee and receive approval from both chambers.

“There may be parts of the bill that just trample the constitution and would invite a whole slew of lawsuits about the definition of what is probable cause,â€

    Immigration bill punishes students, state
    Delph

Whatever is driving the anti-immigration sentiment in the Indiana General Assembly – whether it’s a sincere concern for the state’s economic well-being or a belief that undocumented residents should be punished – it threatens to set the state back by decades.

In targeting students striving to reach academic goals, the proposal represents a mean-spirited and backward approach as Indiana struggles to raise educational achievement and per-capita earnings.

SB 590, authored by Carmel Republican Michael Delph and modeled after Arizona’s controversial immigration law, includes provisions aimed at restricting education opportunities for immigrants. Without proper documentation, students wouldn’t be eligible for in-state tuition or state aid.

Fortunately, some high-profile leaders in business, religion and education are stepping forward to protest by supporting the Indiana Compact, a statement of principles on immigration reform. Butler University President Bobby Fong, the American-born son of undocumented Chinese immigrants, is among the supporters. His own achievement serves as quiet testimony to the value of educational achievement not only for an individual, but for an entire state.

Indiana colleges and universities practice a sort of “don’t ask, don’t tellâ€

Funny how all the polls that are asking Citizens what they think seem to support very tough crackdowns on illegals. Yet they keep trying to scream Americans don't want this. Apparently we do and its the illegals who don't.

And Democrats - and some Repubs - continue to oppose legislation which would help to reserve American jobs for American workers. No mater how high the unemployment numbers go, and no matter how many Americans are facing what appears to be structual unemployment, they simply turn a blind eye.
