A hotline to report illegal immigrants set up in July by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio got the approval of 53 percent of people asked in a statewide poll.

Another 35 percent opposed the hotline and 12 percent were undecided in the telephone poll of 738 voters made over the weekend and released Tuesday.

"The majority support the hotline and support me," Arpaio said, adding that he is expanding publicity about the hotline, (602) 876-4154, by putting the number on trucks that will travel the Valley.

The Cronkite-Eight poll was conducted by KAET Eight-TV and the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University.

It has a sampling error of plus or minus of 3.6 percentage points.
