Poll: 64% of voters support immigration law

Arizona’s immigration law continues to garner support nationally, according to Rasmussen Reports.

A new Rasmussen poll shows 55 percent of U.S. voters support the idea of allowing police to stop and check the status of suspected illegal immigrants. One out of three in the 1,000 person national survey oppose that notion.

Another 69 percent support the idea of requiring police to check identification and immigration papers when writing traffic tickets if they suspect the person is in the U.S. illegally. Twenty-three percent oppose that concept.

Arizona’s law gives police more authority to question and arrest illegal immigrants. The law has sparked boycotts from Los Angeles, Seattle, labor unions and Hispanic activists and has caused the cancelation of some meetings and conventions. The national survey was conducted May 14 and 15.

Rasmussen also released Arizona polls Wednesday. The 500-person Arizona survey gives U.S. Sen. John McCain a 52 percent to 40 percent lead over J.D. Hayworth in the Republican primary.

The state survey also shows Gov. Jan Brewer’s popularity improving since she signed the contentious immigration bill. Eighty-five percent of Republicans and 64 percent of all Arizona voters approve of Brewer as governor, according to the polls.

Those are better than previous approval ratings for Brewer when she got heat for the state’s budget woes. The state poll was conducted May 17
