Day laborers to help project

POMONA - A group of day laborers will be out in force this morning donating their time to a south Pomona beautification project.
Between 15 and 30 members of the Pomona Economic Opportunity Center, also referred to as the Pomona Day Labor Center, will be out planting groundcover along two of the city's major thoroughfares, said Suzanne Foster, the center's executive director.

Volunteers spent part of Friday contacting residents and asking for their help by watering areas where the plants will be added today, said Councilwoman Cristina Carrizosa who represents the area where the project will be carried out.

The work will take place on parts of County Road between Garey and Towne avenues and parts of Towne Avenue from the 60 Freeway to Philadelphia Street, she said. A small area near Philadelphia Elementary School will also be improved.

Plants will be added to publicly owned areas such as parkways and some private properties where owners agreed to have the work done, Carrizosa said.

The day labor center is donating $500 worth of plant material and between $1,000 and $1,500 worth of labor, Foster said.

For the laborers this is an opportunity to show residents their commitment to community.

"We want to remind people we're members of the community and have an interest in making the community better, safer and more beautiful," Foster said.

Carrizosa said this is a small beautification project but if it's

successful it may be possible to do the same thing in other areas.
