Pompano man gets 37 months in prison for plot to hire out illegal workers

FORT LAUDERDALE · A Pompano Beach man was sentenced in federal court Wednesday to 37 months in prison for his role in a nationwide scheme where he delivered hundreds of illegal migrant workers from Eastern Europe to work for U.S. companies that thought they were hiring legal workers.

Pavel Preus, 36, of Pompano Beach, also faces 36 months of supervised released and has been ordered to pay $950,000 in unpaid payroll taxes.

Jozef Bogacki, 43, of Clearwater, and Jaroslaw Sawczuk, 39, formerly of Coral Springs, worked with Preus and pleaded guilty to similar charges Wednesday, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Miami.

Federal authorities in Kansas and South Florida investigated the case and said that the trio, together with three other men who are considered fugitives, contracted with American companies to deliver workers.

They made their profits by sending migrant workers they did not have to pay federal taxes on because they were in the U.S. illegally.

Investigators think the practice started in 1995 and involved more than 550 workers who were employed in the Midwest and southeastern U.S. on farms and in factories.

During the course of the conspiracy, the men failed to pay $6 million in payroll taxes and laundered more than $20 million, authorities said.

"The defendants, as charged, chose profits over compliance with our country's immigration and employment laws," said U.S. Attorney Alex Acosta, of the Southern District of Florida. "In using illegal aliens to generate their profits, the defendants not only took advantage of these individuals, but also potentially compromised the safety of our citizens."
