Port officers seize $62,000 in marijuana

DOUGLAS — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers made the first seizure of the year as they were screening traffic on New Year’s Day.

Their discovery was more than $62,000 of marijuana, according to the agency.

At about 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, officers became suspicious of a vehicle occupied by two men identified as Mexican nationals.


The vehicle was searched by a Customs and Border Protection K-9 team, which assisted the officers in finding a secret compartment located in the back bumper, the agency said. More than 39 pounds of marijuana was seized.

The vehicle was seized, and the men were turned over to the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further investigation, according to Customs and Border Protection, according to the agency.
