Obama: Immigration Reform Won't Happen Without GOP Support

Immigration Reform Won't Happen Without GOP Support, Obama Tells Latino Celebrities in a Meeting:

Comprehensive immigration reform doesn't stand a chance without Republican support, President Obama said in a White House meeting with Latino celebrities on Thursday.

The president said that without the support of Republicans, who now have a majority in the House of Representatives, an overhaul of the immigration system that would include a path to legalization stood little chance of happening, according to those who were at the meeting.

"The White House wants Hispanics to understand that the president cannot just create laws, nor can he just stop deportations by decree," tweeted Univision anchor Maria Elena Salinas. To the question about whether there will be immigration reform, she added, the answer was "Not without Republicans."

President Obama met at the White House with Latino celebrities to stress his commitment to immigration reform, according to a White House email about the meeting.

The meeting took place amid mounting frustration among many Latinos – long a crucial voting bloc for Democrats – over what they see as Obama’s hollow promises to reform immigration policy.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, actress Eva Longoria said the president stressed his commitment to the DREAM Act, a measure that would help undocumented youth obtain legal status if they meet certain conditions. Most states do not allow undocumented immigrants to attend public colleges where they live at in-state tuition rates, making a higher education cost-prohibitive for many of them.

Last year, the DREAM Act passed in the House, where the Democrats were a majority, but failed in the Senate.

"Obviously we were all disappointed that it didn't pass," said Longoria. "They're wonderful students. It's really undebatable that they should be here and continue their education. We need an educated workforce and these kids would be that."

Among others invited to the meeting were Don Francisco, host of the variety show “Sabado Gigante,â€

"The message has to get across not only to Latinos but to non-Latinos," Longoria said. "There's fear, people have a fear" of immigrants. [quote:16amoyu1]

April 28, 2011: Rock band Maná is urging all Latinos to vote and get involved with Immigration reform at the Billboard Music Conference in Miami Beach, Fla.

You people with the rock band must have the money to support millions of undocumented aliens, since you are pushing for them to remain in this Country?

Obama must push immigration reform to retain Hispanic vote:

    Published April 29, 2011

    EFE

Tucson – President Barack Obama must take action to push for immigration reform if he wants to keep the Hispanic vote in the 2012 election, Arizona Congressman Raul Grijalva said in an interview with Efe.

"The meetings that the president is holding on the immigration issue are a necessary step, but now we have to see what the result of these meetings will be," the Democratic lawmaker told Efe.

Obama is meeting on Thursday at the White House with prominent Hispanics like Emilio Estefan, Eva Longoria and Jose Diaz-Balart to discuss immigration reform. This meeting comes less than two weeks after the president met with political leaders to discuss the issue.

Now, according to Grijalva, various political actors want to see that Obama is using his authority as president to protect families that are being separated by deportations and those undocumented students who could benefit from the DREAM Act, which remains stalled in Congress.

"The president has the right and the ability to do it," said the lawmaker, who added that currently the necessary support to approve immigration reform does not exist in either the House or the Senate.

"President Obama certainly has enough authority to make life calmer for many families," he emphasized.

On April 11, ImpreMedia released an opinion survey of Latinos about the work done so far by Congress and Obama.

Although the president and the Democratic Party continue to retain the Hispanic vote, the survey results suggest that Latino voters are feeling more and more unsettled, which could lead a number of undecided voters to vote against them in the 2012 presidential and congressional election.

While 41 percent of those surveyed said they were certain they would vote for Obama, 14 percent said they would vote for the president but could change their mind at election time, another 10 percent said they were undecided although they were leaning toward Obama and another 14 percent were completely undecided.

The survey was conducted between March 24 and April 2 among 500 Hispanic voters registered in 21 states.

To win the 2012 elections, Obama and the Democrats cannot "allow themselves the luxury" of losing the Hispanic vote, Grijalva said.

For activists like Jennifer Allen, director of the Border Action Network, the immigration issue continues to be the one of most importance to the Hispanic community, particularly in states like Arizona, which transformed itself into the epicenter of the immigration debate after the implementation of state law SB1070, a measure that aims to criminalize undocumented migrants.

"We hope that with the approach of the presidential election we'll see a positive change on the immigration issue," Allen told Efe.

"We need the support of different sectors to break the ice that's freezing immigration reform," she said.

So they latino community can now see in black and white that immigration reform isn't going to happen at all then. Republicans are not going to change their minds, not going to back down and not going to cave in to a bunch of criminals who have comehere in violation of our nations laws.

This glitzy Latino razzmatazz circus is just vulgar and out of place. America is NOT about ethnicity or race, it is a country ruled by laws and not by men. I am getting really sick and tired also of those people who really do believe that there are coming here to take over and recast my country. Not only there will be no amnesty but we will also enact English as our official language and quash all fantasies about establishing Spanish in this country. America is the most welcoming nation in the world and so I say to all those who come from Latin America, welcome, welcome if you intend to integrate, assimilate, add your flavor to our culture, sure but if you are here thinking that you are more special than any other ethnicity and somehow you are seeking to recast my country to suit your culture and language you are sorely mistaken, and so I say to you to go back home and enjoy your culture in your country and please leave now.
