MONTGOMERY, AL - US Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., spoke briefly on the floor of the Alabama Senate after being introduced by former U.S. Rep. H.L. "Sonny" Callahan, R-Mobile.

Hunter, former chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said he is running on a campaign of "strong national defense."

"We need to have good, enforceable borders," he said. "And we need to change our trade basis to a two-way street rather than a one-way street. China has pushed a lot of our goods off the shelves."

Callahan, who served in the Alabama Senate before being elected to Congress, is Hunter's Alabama campaign chairman.

Two other GOP presidential candidates have addressed joint sessions of the Alabama Legislature: Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani spoke Tuesday, and Sen. John McCain of Arizona spoke a couple of weeks ago. However, conservatives appear to be more receptive to Hunter's conservative message.
