Previously Deported Ex-Con Arrested in Phoenix

PHOENIX (AP) — Authorities say a man who's served prison time for murder and been deported at least twice to his native Mexico has been arrested in Phoenix and is facing more charges.

Arizona authorities say 47-year-old Evelio Padilla-Ortega was taken into custody Friday. He's been charged with re-entering the United States after deportation, a felony violation that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Authorities say Padilla-Ortega was previously deported in 2003 and 2005 after serving more than a year in prison following a conviction on aggravated DUI and auto theft charges.

In 1988, authorities say Padilla-Ortega committed a homicide in California and subsequently fled to Mexico to avoid prosecution. They say he was arrested in Mexico, found guilty of homicide committed in a foreign country and sentenced to six years in a Mexican prison.
