Previously deported illegal immigrant sentenced on weapons charge

    Elizabeth LaFleur, The Greenville News Published 10:25 a.m. ET Sept. 6, 2018 | Updated 2:03 p.m. ET Sept. 6, 2018

A Mexican citizen who was previously deported from the United States on multiple occasions was sentenced on a felony weapon charge in Greenville this week.

According to a release from the United States Attorney's Office in South Carolina, Luis Cenobio Barrera, 24, of Tamaulipas, Mexico, was sentenced to 108 months in prison after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Barrera was arrested in January after Greenville police received multiple calls for assistance regarding a firearm-related disturbance that originated at a gas station located on South Pleasantburg Drive in Greenville.

Barrera was identified as the suspect in that case. Officers later found Barrera's vehicle. According to authorities, when they approached his vehicle, Barrera jumped from the vehicle and fled the area, ignoring commands to stop.

Officers attempted to locate Barrera with a K-9, but were unsuccessful.

During the search, officers located a military-style rifle in Barrera's vehicle, according to the U.S Attorney's Office.

Barrera was later arrested in Charlotte and returned to Greenville where his case was heard by Judge Henry M. Herlong.

Based on information provided by Greenville police, the Department of Homeland Security identified Barrera as a citizen of Mexico who was previously removed from the U.S. on multiple occasions.

Prior crimes leading to his first removal included a conspiracy robbery with a dangerous weapon and discharge or a weapon into an occupied property. Both charges were in North Carolina, Barrera served a state prison sentence, then was removed to Mexico in May 2013.

Following that removal, Homeland Security said Barrera returned to the U.S. without permission. In January 2016, he was again arrested in Charlotte, this time for carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and hit-and-run.

Barrera was convicted of illegal reentry in Oct. 2016 and served a sentence. He was again removed from the U.S. to Mexico, according to Homeland Security.
