MS-13: Coming Soon to Your Home Town?

No, it's not a new movie rating. As most readers probably know by now, "MS-13" is short for the Salvadoran gang Mara Salvatrucha, which has gained notoriety over the past several years for its efforts to convey jihadists and terrorist weaponry into the United States.

In his 2007 book The Day of Islam, Paul Williams reports that by 2004 cells of radical Islamists, including al Qaeda and Hezbollah, had established themselves in Mexico. "The Muslim radicals began to use Latino gangs, including Mara Salvatrucha [a.k.a. MS-13], to shepherd them across the border into the United States." Early that year in Queens, NY, FBI agents arrested Mohammad Junaid Babar, a leading al Qaeda operative.

Babar "told interrogators that al Qaeda was planning a spectacular attack on American soil -- a nuclear 9/11.. He further said that al Qaeda tarrorists were relying on Latino gangs, most notably Mara Salvatrucha members, to transport not only operatives but also nuclear supplies and weapons across the border." His testimony was confirmed that November by captured Egyptian al Qaeda operative Sharif al-Masri.

But MS-13's cozy ties to al Qaeda et al tend to get left out of MSM reporting when law enforcement moves to round up members of the gang from amongst the wider population of illegal immigrants.

Williams includes the following quote, dated 10/04, from the Jamestown Foundation: "The [MS-13] gang has some form of prsence in virtually every Hispanic community across the United States, and can offer al Qaeda unparalled infiltration into any city in the country."

It is one thing to understand this in the abstract but quite another to pick up the 8/29/07 issue of the Boston Globe and read that federals agents and local police had raided locations in three Eastern Massachusetts cities, including my "home town" of Chelsea, specifically targeting MS-13 members.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Michael Gilhooly emphasized that this was not a random "sweep" of illegal immigrants. "We are targeting specific individuals who are a threat to public safety," he said.

In 2005 Customs initiated Operation Community Shield as a national effort targeting MS-13, though the operation has since been expanded to include all gangs. MS-13, which was formed in Los Angeles in the early 1980s, deals mostly in drugs, arms and car theft, all important sources of income to jihadist groups.

Yet, nowhere in the Boston Globe article is this link between MS-13 and Islamist terrorism so much as hinted at. Instead, several paragraphs focused on the concerns of "immigration advocates", immigrants -- documented and otherwise -- and their concerned and supportive employers as news of the raids spread and immigrant workers scrambled to retrieve documentation or swiftly disappeared.

After one man sporting an MS-13 tattoo was arrested at a Somerville auto body shop, his boss insisted he was an excellent employee who "worked all available hours. He was a nice kid. I feel bad for him." Another boss, one Jack Foster, who insisted that all his workers were documented, complained that the operation "created a major panic here for no reason".

According to Williams, in May 2004 several Mara Salvatrucha leaders were spotted at an internet cafe in Hondoras conferring with Adnan el-Shukrijumah, named by both Babar and al-Masri as the al Qaeda operative in charge of coordinating that "nuclear 9/11" plan mentioned above. There's plenty of "reason", Mr. Foster. Unfortunately you, like most Americans, haven't bothered to take the time and effort to find out what those reasons are.

A recent report came out about the gangs in the Chicago area. It reported that Waukegan had over 3,000 gang members. Our police chief naturally went a bit bonkers about this and said no, we only have 1,488. That still astounds me. A recent ICE raid only rounded up a couple of dozen though. Drop in the bucket.

Anyway, I have seen '13' and 'M13' sprayed in two places. I contacted the chief, he said it was another gang and/or wannabees. The '13' had three pyramid dots after it. I haven't found anything on the web about M13 specifically yet...
