CAMDEN – A Salvadoran man, who failed to register as a sex offender after entering the United States illegally, has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison.

Samuel De Jesus Corvera-Mata, arrested in Camden County in October 2017, was previously deported to El Salvador after serving a 10-year prison term for sex crimes in California, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Jersey.

Corvera-Mata, 43, was convicted in 1996 of committing “multiple lewd and lascivious acts upon a 7-year-old child,” the federal prosecutor’s office said.

He was deported in 2004.

Details on where Corvera-Mata was arrested in South Jersey were not immediately available. The arrest followed "an investigation and targeted operation" by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to a criminal complaint.

He pleaded guilty earlier this year to illegal re-entry subsequent to conviction for an aggravated felony and failing to register as a sex offender, the federal prosecutor’s office said.

As part of the plea deal, Corvera-Mata agreed not to challenge an existing order for his removal from the country.

Corvera-Mata was sentenced Monday by U.S. District Judge Jerome Simandle in Camden.
