Program with Arpaio defended by top ICE official

Program with Arpaio defended by top ICE official
ICE official: Migrants in U.S. without criminal records cannot be ignored

    by Daniel González - Jan. 21, 2010 12:00 AM
    The Arizona Republic

A top U.S. immigration-enforcement official on Wednesday defended a federal program that lets local jail officials from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office check the immigration status of people booked into jail.

During a large protest on Saturday in Phoenix that drew 10,000 people, immigrant-rights advocates called on the Department of Homeland Security to end the program, saying some Valley police officers are engaging in racial profiling by arresting Latinos for minor crimes in order to check their immigration status during the booking process.

But John Morton, the assistant secretary for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said that is "not in practice what we have seen in the program" known as 287 (g).

Furthermore, he said that while the agency places a priority on arresting illegal immigrants who commit serious crimes, it also cannot turn "a blind eye to people who are here unlawfully simply because they don't have a criminal record."

Morton said the program has been consistent in meeting the agency's priority of arresting illegal immigrants who commit serious crimes.

"Sixty nine percent of the people we receive in Maricopa County have been convicted of Level 1 and Level 2 offenses, which are serious felony offenses, drug trafficking, assaults, rape," Morton said during a meeting with editors and reporters at The Arizona Republic.

More than 90 percent of the cases presented to the U.S. Attorney in Arizona involving people who committed a felony crime of re-entering the U.S. after deportation from the Maricopa County jail, Morton added.

In October, Morton refused to renew a contract between ICE and Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio that let deputies arrest immigration violators on the street.

ICE said it didn't renew the contract because Arpaio's controversial crime sweeps were inconsistent with the agency's priorities of focusing on criminals.

The new contract, however, left intact the jail program allowing Sheriff's deputies to check immigration status of all people booked into the jail.

Top ICE Official Defends Ariz. Immigration Sweeps
    Last Updated: Fri, 01/22/2010 - 4:14pm

Amid a Justice Department racial profiling investigation and colossal protests by Latino rights advocates, a top Obama immigration official is defending an Arizona program that once allowed a county sheriff to arrest illegal aliens.

The immigration sweeps, conducted by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department, have apprehended dozens of illegal immigrants with criminal records and vastly improved the sprawling Phoenix metropolitan area by restoring law and order in a large business district rife with solicitation, trespassing, loitering and public health ordinance violations created by day laborers.

The operations were conducted under a local-federal partnership—known as 287(g)—that trains police officers nationwide to enforce immigration laws. The program has been effective in drastically reducing violent crime in local communities and aiding in the deportation of thousands of criminal illegal aliens who would otherwise fall through the cracks.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department is the biggest law enforcement agency to participate in 287(g) and the elected official who runs it, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, has come under fire from politically-connected La Raza groups that have pressured the feds to investigate the sheriff for racial profiling and violating the constitutional rights of illegal immigrants.

The Justice Department has taken the task seriously, even bringing back deported illegal aliens to the U.S. to be witnesses against Maricopa deputies. The feds claim they must take every step to investigate the serious allegations of discrimination and unconstitutional searches and seizures on the part of officers and their elected leader. In October the Maricopa Sheriff’s Department was stripped of its immigration enforcement authority.

Now the high-ranking U.S. immigration official responsible for the move is defending the sheriff and his effective crime sweeps. During a large weekend march to protest the immigration crackdowns, the assistant secretary for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (John Morton) said there was no evidence of racial profiling by deputies in Maricopa County and that the majority of the illegal immigrants arrested have been convicted of serious crimes.

"Sixty nine percent of the people we receive in Maricopa County have been convicted of Level 1 and Level 2 offenses, which are serious felony offenses, drug trafficking, assaults, rape," Morton said during a meeting with editors of a local newspaper. The assistant secretary added that the Maricopa program has been consistent with meeting his agency’s priority of arresting illegal immigrants who commit serious crimes.

Yet the agency, caving into political pressure, refused to renew the sheriff’s contract to continue the immigration enforcement program. It was baffling considering the Department of Homeland Security had previously praised the enforcement operation, including in a 2008 federal audit that determined it was “excellentâ€

    People from Haiti

"Sec. of State Hillary Clinton appears to be putting out the perfect signal to try to prevent thousands of Haitians from risking their lives in leaky boats to enter the U.S. illegally."

I do not like this part: "Clinton's message to the Haitian people was most welcome after rumors early this week from inside the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that contingency plans were underway for diverting boat people to Gitmo in Cuba to be processed for entry into the U.S. We don't know if our inside sources were just badly interpreting what they were hearing or if this is a case of pragmatic heads winning out in an internal debate."

The United States is in severe decline

One reason for that is because we provide funds (our tax dollars) to support illegal aliens.

"Ron Paul explains how the United States is in severe decline, and yet congress keeps asking for supplimental spending, and we are expanding wars in places where we can’t even identify the enemy."

Having owned a restaurant in Phoenix I have met a number of people who have gone to marches to protest illegal immigration. Every one of them told me of violence perpetrated by Hispanics against them or someone else in the march. Even mentioning bricks being thrown. The news never reports on what illegals are actually doing and the violence they deliver and never reports on what Joe is doing that is helping.

Sheriff Joe has been body slammed so many times by Janet and her band of terrorizing illegal lovers and every time they look at the data they find he stops "average white people" at a percentage relative to the general population. There is no data to support the theory that he is profiling except the claims of the law-breakers. He stops them for speeding, broken windshields, erratic driving. All the things the police notice when they are on the roads. Wouldn't you think if you are illegal and all this information is in the news you would not drive drunk or speed or you would get the windshield fixed so you would not get stopped?

Campaign to Reform Immigration for America
    Washington, DC

    ORIGINAL JOB LISTING

About the Campaign: The campaign to Reform Immigration for America (RI4A) is a large coalition of local and national organizations that has come together to encourage Congress to pass comprehensive humane immigration reform. The campaign is working on multiple fronts -- generating policy recommendations, reaching potential supporters through a coordinated on- and offline field campaign, and raising issue visibility in the media.

A critical piece of the effort is building a large email and mobile list of supporters that can be mobilized on a moment's notice to support the passage of good immigration policies. The anti-immigration movement has been organizing their base for years, and recently mobilized over a million supporters to help pass damaging and inhumane anti-immigration policies. In order to win the passage of just and humane immigration reform, we must organize supporters in a coordinated way, both on and offline, to ensure that the progressive viewpoint is heard loud and clear on Capitol Hill.

Position overview: We are seeking 1-2 interns to start in mid-January. The ideal candidate will be a fast learner with a passion for furthering the cause of immigration reform. Previous experience working with coalitions and distributed teams successfully is a plus. The intern will report directly to the RI4A Online Communications Director. Scary!
