A woman who tried to smuggle a 1-year-old boy into the United States from Mexico was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison Tuesday.
Yadira Santillanes-Aguilar, 36, told authorities that a neighbor hired her for $50 to take the child to a department store in Nogales, Ariz., where his mother would be waiting, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Arizona.
When Santillanes-Aguilar arrived at the Nogales port of entry, she claimed the child was her own and presented a laser visa for him, the release said.
The boy was turned over to the Mexican Consulate and was ultimately reunited with his family, the release said.
Santillanes-Aguilar of Nogales, Sonora, pled guilty to conspiracy to transporting an illegal immigrant in June.
