Protest against Minutemen at border

A dozen Whatcom County residents assembled at the Peace Arch border crossing in Blaine Jan. 21 to protest the unfair and illegal treatment of immigrants attempting to cross into the United States.

The protesters distributed 500 leaflets opposing groups who use armed forces to guard the border to car passengers waiting to enter the United States, said Rosalinda Guillen, the protest’s head organizer and executive director of Community to Community Development, a Bellingham environmental and social justice organization.

Western sophomore Ian Morgan and Western junior David Cahn helped organize the protest. They joined Community to Community Development in distributing leaflets. Cahn said.

Approximately 30 voluntary groups known as Minutemen have formed in the United States, he said.

The protest reinforces anti-minutemen sentiment in Whatcom county, Guillen said.
