Pub owner sentenced for smuggling illegal aliens

BUFFALO (AP) - A Buffalo-area pub owner has been sentenced for helping smuggle dozens of illegal aliens from Ireland into the United States.

That's according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Gretchen Wylegala, who said yesterday that Bridget Campbell of Depew was sentenced to six months in prison.

The 37-year-old woman pleaded guilty to alien smuggling for financial gain on March 2. She's admitted to smuggling between 30 and 50 illegal aliens by way of Canada since December 2003.

In her plea, Campbell admitted she'd hired people from her bar to shuttle the aliens and to coach them on what questions might be asked by border inspectors.

Authorities believe that from Buffalo, most of those smuggled in traveled to New York City, where many got jobs in the food service industry.

Campbell has said she received a fee of one 1,200 dollars per alien. As part of sentencing, she's also been ordered to pay 36-thousand dollars.

Shoplifting could get more than six month. And the $36K is the low end of what she might have been paid. But on the other hand, the NAU needs more population so perhaps they should be paying her. Hope they are all very young so they can have lots of anchors.
