R.I.: Illegal immigrant sentenced in RI for re-entry

Illegal immigrant sentenced in RI for re-entry

    October 21, 2011

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A Dominican national with a lengthy criminal record has been sentenced in Rhode Island to nearly six years in federal prison for illegally re-entering the country.

Federal prosecutors say 39-year-old Domingo Torres-Rodriguez was sentenced on Friday in U.S. District Court in Providence.

Court records say Torres-Rodriguez was deported in 1992, 1999 and 2006 following felony convictions for drugs and an assault.

Prosecutors say Pawtucket police arrested him last November on drug and identity fraud charges. They say Torres-Rodriguez told immigration officials he returned to the United States in 2008 by taking a ship to Philadelphia.

He is awaiting trial on state charges. It was not immediately clear who is representing him on that matter.

They say Torres-Rodriguez told immigration officials he returned to the United States in 2008 by taking a ship to Philadelphia.
How did this happen? What ship goes to Philadelphia? Are ships allowing Mexican nationals to leave a ship in the US and not notify officials if they do not return?

Think about this - easy, cushy ride with 6 meals per day from Mexico to the US, no travel through the desert, no worry about border patrol, and no need to pay the coyotes thousands of dollars. A "cruise" costs only a few hundred. A cheaper version would be to sign on as a crew member and walk off.

This needs to be investigated - what ship, how, where?
