CORONADO — U.S. Border Patrol agents took several suspected illegal immigrants into custody Friday morning in Coronado.

The group of about eight men and women were apprehended on the beach north of the Hotel Del Coronado around 7:45 a.m., witnesses said.

Terrance Hodges said he saw agents handcuff the people on the sand and then lead them to an awaiting van. He said it appeared everyone in custody had been in the water, as they were wet.

The capture came after a report that a panga boat was believed capsized off the Silver Strand near the Coronado Cays.

Several agencies, including the Coast Guard, searched the area but did not find a boat in distress. The Border Patrol later said the report was unfounded.

Further details about the apprehension have not been released.
