Reyes supports sentence reduction for Ramos, Compean
Posted: Dec 10, 2007 06:14 PM PST
EL PASO -- U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes came home on Monday to announce he will seek another term -- his seventh -- next year.
Reyes also commented on the two former Border Patrol agents from El Paso who were sentenced to lengthy prison terms after jurors convicted them of shooting a fleeing drug suspect and hiding evidence of the incident.
Reyes said he supports a commutation -- or reduction -- in the sentences of Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean.
Reyes said the mandatory sentence of ten years for using a weapon during a crime shouldn't always apply to law enforcement. "If there was no corruption involved, they should not under the same mandatory sentencing provisions of a common criminal," he said.
A federal jury convicted Ramos and Compean of assault, obstruction of justice and civil rights violations in the wounding of Osvaldo Aldrete Davila on the Texas border near El Paso in 2005.
The agents' attorneys are asking the 5th Circuit to throw out the convictions. The judges didn't indicate when they will rule on the appeals.

reyes supports??? hmm he must be aware its time to run for office again because when this incident happened he was no where to be found in their corner, didnt return phone calls from either family member and went so far as to say that he had no problem with the prosecution of these two men..
he said he had no problem with the jail time and actually sounded like a johnny sutton mouthpiece saying the trial was fair and they were found guilty of these crimes

Reyes cannot be trusted
Reyes hires La RAZA staffers in his DC office. Last I was there, we were waiting to speak to a certain staffer and started making small talk with the receptionist (probably an intern). She said she was from the University of Texas, and asked her where she was from (meaning what part of Texas)...her reply: "I'm Mexican!". I was flabbergasted at her ignorance. I asked her if she was born in the U.S., she said yes. So I said, then you are an AMERICAN, a U.S. citizen. She was very dazed and confused by my statements.
