READ: Tea Party leader: "hundreds of thousands" of supporters overwhelm. oppose bill

Note the highlighted quote below from Niger Innis, who was one of the Tea Party leaders who met with Rubio yesterday. It's very clear his members oppose the Rubio/Schumer amnesty bill.

But then why is Innis apparently "softening" his stance after hearing Rubio's talking points, contrary to what his members want?? (see follow up story)

Rubio to Hear From Immigration Critics

By David M. DruckerPosted at 4:03 p.m. on May 7

At least one conservative organization attending a Tuesday afternoon meeting to discuss immigration reform with Sen. Marco Rubio is opposed to the “gang of eight” bill.

TheTeaParty.Net is a grass-roots organization on the guest list of about two dozen grass-roots conservative leaders invited to discuss the Senate immigration overhaul with the Florida Republican. The group released a statement ahead of the meeting making clear that it opposes the legislation in its current form.

In the statement, TheTeaParty.Net Chief Strategist Niger Innis makes clear that the group is open to hearing from Rubio out of respect for his conservative bona fides. But at this point, the group views the proposal as “more Schumer than Rubio” — a reference to Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., a member of the gang — because of the path to citizenship component, which the organization refers to as amnesty.

TheTeaParty.Net Pushes Back Against Claims It Is Supporting Gang of Eight Immigration Plan
WASHINGTON D.C. – Commenting on reports that TheTeaParty.net is among the conservative groups supporting the Gang of Eight immigration bill, Niger Innis, Chief Strategist of the nation’s largest tea party organization TheTeaParty.net, said:

“We were invited by Sen. Rubio’s office to discuss the current legislation on immigration, and importantly, to offer our views on how we think it can be fixed. We are going to hear him out, rather than rely on the mainstream media interpretation of his legislation. Reports that we have agreed to support the Gang of Eight bill are utter make-believe.”

“We have heard from the hundreds of thousands of activists and supporters affiliated with TheTeaParty.net. Overwhelmingly and resoundingly, they oppose this bill. We are there to tell Sen. Rubio what the conservative base is saying. And that is no to amnesty and yes to securing the border now. Unless this bill can be proven not to be another ill-fated attempt at amnesty and not a way of adding hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants to the already considerable burdens of the welfare state, we cannot and will not support the Gang of Eight bill. We believe that Sen. Rubio is an honorable man and is trying to do the right thing, but this bill is currently more Schumer than Rubio.”

Rubio Meeting Softens Immigration Skeptic’s View

    By David M. DruckerPosted at 11:47 a.m. May 8

At least one tea party skeptic of the immigration overhaul bill created by the “gang of eight” emerged from a private Tuesday meeting with Sen. Marco Rubio encouraged that the Florida Republican is committed to adjusting the legislation in a way that would make it palatable to conservatives.

Niger Innis, of TheTeaParty.net expressed deep reservations with the Senate bill before the gathering, which featured about 30 conservative supporters and skeptics of the comprehensive rewrite package. In a statement provided to this blog before the meeting, Innis referred to the bill as “more Schumer than Rubio,” in reference to New York Sen. Charles E. Schumer, one of four Democrats in the gang of eight. Innis also made a point of expressing suspicion about the legislation’s pathway to citizenship component, which he called “amnesty.”

But Wednesday morning, Innis sounded a slightly different tune after hearing Rubio’s remarks about where the legislation is headed and the changes he is committed to pushing. Although Innis did not change his mind about the group’s legislation in its current form — and made clear that activist members of TheTeaParty.net are unlikely to support the proposal — he signaled that his grass-roots organization is poised to back Rubio’s immigration effort if he can push the changes to the bill that he has said he wants.

Perhaps just as importantly, Rubio has not lost TheTeaParty.net’s trust as a conservative stalwart. “Sen. Rubio is a very impressive leader. He’s a rising star within the conservative movement and is very brave to take on an issue that is so important and somewhat controversial,” Innis told CQ Roll Call. “We feel confident that Sen. Rubio is going to continue to try and move this bill in the right direction — ideologically and literally. We feel that he is committed as a conservative to push this as far to the right as he possibly can.”

Rubio continues to push back against conservative critics of the Senate bill who have labeled it as amnesty for the approximately 11 million illegal-immigrant residents, while embracing the call for changes from the right, such as a desire for stronger border enforcement provisions.

Innis said Rubio has a tough task, pushing against a Senate that is controlled by the Democrats and members of the gang of eight, such as Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and John McCain, R-Ariz., who Innis believes are more likely to agree with the four Democrats than Rubio and Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake, the other GOP member of the group. Innis said he would like TheTeaParty.net to serve as a conduit of communication between Rubio and conservative activists as the Floridian works to improve the immigration bill.

“We will give him access to explain details of the bill,” Innis said. “He’s got one difficult, heavy lift. We recognize that and we want to help him push this bill as far [right] as possible.”
