Rep. Linda Sanchez ignites debate by linking Arizona law to white supremacists

    June 4, 2010 | 7:53 am
U.S. Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-Lakewood) ignited a heated debate when she suggested that Arizona's crackdown on illegal immigration was fueled by white supremacists.

Sanchez criticized the crackdown in a speech before a Democratic group this week.

"The Arizona laws are not a mistake," she said. "They're not accidental or one person's crazy law. There's a concerted effort behind promoting these kinds of laws on a state-by-state basis by people who have ties to white supremacy groups."

Sanchez gave the speech to a Whittier group, and the Whittier Daily News reported it and posted audio as well.

Her comments ignited much controversy. She was criticized by conservative groups and on talk-radio shows Thursday. A spokesman for Arizona's governor also took issue with the comments.

Late Thursday, Sanchez issued a statement attempting to "clarify" her comments.

"I never said that everyone who supports the Arizona law is a racist or white supremacist," she said in the statement.

The Arizona law requires police to determine the immigration status of anyone they stop and suspect is in the country illegally. It also makes it a state crime to lack proper immigration papers. Top U.S. Justice Department officials have drafted a legal challenge asserting that Arizona's law is unconstitutional because it impinges on the federal government's authority to police the nation's borders.

Of Course you didnt! you did say however that the law was written by people associated with White supremacist hate groups though.

So you still DID NOT clarify your statements or words.

Her attack is ad hominem and is a logical fallacy. All that matters is, is the law legally and constitutionally sound? The secret inner motives of anybody within a 1000 mile radius of the capital don't enter into the matter at all.

How come nobody every mentions the totally truthful statement (vs. her lie) that most groups opposed to SB1070 are brown supremacists?

With all honesty, racists have rights too. They have freedom to an opinion, a right to vote, the right of free speech and expression... So do pornographers, atheists and sadists. Doesn't mean you have to like them or hang out with them.

You may find it unethical, unfair, immoral... but that's just another opinion.

When you are told you can't be something which is lawful, that is repression Representative Sanchez or should it be Repressive Sanchez?

Supporting the Arizona legislation is not unlawful no matter who you are or your motivation. In this country, if the majority wants it, then that's what it should receive. The last thing we should begin doing is taking the law writing cues from the criminals or their friends and relatives.

"I never said that everyone who supports the Arizona law is a racist or white supremacist," she said in the statement.
Then why say it at all? Racism might be on her conscience.

Theodore Roosevelt gave the following speech in 1907 to a bunch of immigrants. In my opinion this should be every congressmans and senators stance on immigration.

'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.'
