Rep. Peter King Brokers Deal Between Nassau Cops and Immigration Agents
GARDEN CITY, NY (AP) -- Long Island police and the feds make nice after a dispute concerning immigration raids. Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey says his departmment will work with Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement - called ICE.
A meeting was arranged by Congressman Peter King yesterday, after Mulvey complained last week that ICE agents had displayed a ``cowboy'' mentality while running roughshod over Nassau police during a series of raids targeting gang members and illegal immigrants. At the time Mulvey said his officers won't work with the feds again.
Mulvey also complained that the ICE agents disregarded up-to-date intelligence Nassau police had on where the gang suspects were living and wound up arresting more suspected illegal aliens than gang members.
ICE claims that its ``Operation Community Shield'' has resulted in 1,300 arrests in 19 states over the past four months.
Advocates for undocumented workers have long complained about ICE tactics.
The Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund filed a federal lawsuit last month in Manhattan on behalf of 15 people, including seven U.S. citizens, who say their suburban homes were raided earlier this year.
