New Hayworth ad slams McCain for immigration bill

Associated Press - July 23, 2010 3:44 PM ET

PHOENIX (AP) - A new television ad portrays Arizona Sen. John McCain as a supporter of amnesty for illegal immigrants and links him to President Barack Obama.

Former congressman J.D. Hayworth released the ad on Friday. Hayworth is challenging McCain in Arizona's Aug. 24 Republican primary.

The ad shows a clip of McCain saying he fought hard for comprehensive immigration reform. Another clip shows Obama saying he stood with McCain on the issue, and a photo shows the former presidential rivals hugging.

An announcer says Hayworth "led the fight against McCain's amnesty bill."

McCain denies that he's ever supported amnesty.

Hayworth spokesman Mark Sanders says the campaign is spending $260,000 on the ad, which is running statewide on broadcast and cable.
