Chandra Levy Murder Trial to Begin on Monday

Chandra Levy Murder Trial to Begin on Monday

The trial for an illegal immigrant charged with the 2001 murder of Washington intern Chandra Levy will begin on Monday. This is the trial the ultimately destroyed the career of Congressman Gary Condit.

Gary Condit Initially Believed Involved in Chandra Levy Disappearance

According to the New York Times, Gary Condit was believed to have been involved in the disappearance of Chandra Levy, who was then 24 years old. He was suspected of involvement in the crime, because the two had been involved in a romantic affair. Gary Condit was married at the time.

The events of 9/11, however, put the entire Chandra Levy case on the back burner. After the attacks on 9/11, the Chandra Levy case barely even made the evening news. The investigation continued, nonetheless, but an arrest wasn't made for quite some time.

Ingmar Guandique is an illegal immigrant from El Salvador who had been charged with the attacks of two other women in the area where Chandra Levy's body was finally found. He has also been charged in the death of Chandra Levy.

Gary Condit Expects to Be Called as Witness in Chandra Levy Trial

A spokesman for Gary Condit, who is no longer a congressman, says that Condit is expecting to be called as a witness in the trial. Condit claims he will appear willingly. Of course he is also writing a book on the entire experience, and that would likely provide excellent fodder for his writing.

It is believed that Chandra Levy was killed on May 1, 2001, while walking her dog in a park in Washington, D.C. Her body was found in that park about a year after she went missing.

The fiasco of Chandra Levy's death was certainly exacerbated because of the relationship she was involved in with Gary Condit. Still it is sad for her family that the entire matter was squelched in the press due to the 9/11 attacks. Hopefully this trial will provide her family with the much needed closure they have deserved, and have waited for all this time.

Chandra Levy trial: Jury selection continues in case of murdered intern
    October 19th, 2010 6:52 pm ET.

Tuesday, the jury selection process continued in the murder trial of Ingmar Guandique for the killing of Washington DC intern Chandra Levy nine years ago.

Attorneys spent the day reviewing jury questionnaires that had been handed out to 112 potential jurors. Eventually, the prosecution and the defense will narrow the number of jurors down to 16 -- 12 to sit on the jury and four alternatives.

Wednesday, both sides will begin asking questions of each prospective juror based on the questionnaires to eliminate those who may be biased or have already formed conclusions about the case.

Chandra, 24, went missing in May 2001, and her remains were found a year later in a remote area of Rock Creek Park. Guandique, 29, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, was charged with her murder in 2009.

Chandra Levy trial update: Jury selected in case of murdered DC intern

After a week of prospective juror’s being questioned and whittled down from 114 to only 12, along with several alternates, a jury in the trial regarding Chandra Levy’s murder has been chosen.

The Washington Examiner reports that the jury, including alternates, consists of four men and 12 women -- nine are Caucasian, six are African American, and one is Asian.

Chandra, 24, went missing in 2001 after just completing an internship with the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. Her remains were found about a year later in a remote area of Rock Creek Park in Washington DC.

Ingmar Guandique, 29, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, was charged last year with her murder. The prosecution alleges that he raped and killed Chandra while she was jogging in the park.

According to defense attorney Santha Sonenberg, one prospective juror had posted a message on Twitter after jury selection was complete, writing “Guilty. Guilty. I say now. I will not be swayed. Practicing for jury duty.â€
