Resolution condemns hiring of illegal immigrants by contractors

TULSA, Okla. Tulsa's City Council passed a resolution tonight condemning the hiring of illegal workers by city contractors.

But some groups say the action's a political stunt that takes away from a legitimate debate needed on immigration reform.

With the unanimous vote, Tulsa became the latest Oklahoma city to enact or consider local measures to address illegal immigration in the U-S.

Tulsa Councilman Bill Christiansen, who introduced the resolution, says it's a "soft way" to let contractors know the city expects them to comply with federal and state laws.

There are currently no financial penalties for disobeying the resolution, but the council could decide to add them through an ordinance.
