Respect our country's laws and traditions or... leave!

Felicia Benamon

Today is the infamous day that illegals are supposed to proclaim in the streets their right to be here. Well, I'm speaking out to say that, if you want to be here, then respect our laws, our traditions, and our way of life as Americans! You can't have one foot in Mexico and another in this wonderful country, the U.S.A.!

The politics of the whole illegal immigration debate continues. President of the Minutemen Civil Defense Corps, Chris Simcox says that if President Bush does not act to build a border fence along the U.S./Mexico border, the Minutemen will! This is an example of the continued desperation from the public to get the President's attention on massive illegal immigration to this country.

President Bush has continued in his support for a guest-worker program. He maintains that as a country we have to be, "a nation of law and be a compassionate nation at the same time."

The President says, "Massive deportation of the people here is not going to work." Well why not? Not all at once of course, but a stringent crackdown needs to continue, as it has already started in recent weeks, cracking down on illegals and those who hire them.

Americans have been as compassionate as possible, reaching out to a huge population of people who aren't supposed to be here. But lately, the carelessness with which illegals treat our generosity has rubbed many Americans the wrong way. Even Latinos born in the U.S. are against illegals coming across the border. Lionel De La Rosa of Phoenix, AZ mentions that the recent protests are to give the impression that all Latinos want illegals to become legal. De La Rosa says he is for the House bill, H.R. 4477, that would criminalize illegals. "I'm for that 100 percent," he said. "As far as my Latino friends are concerned, they all agree on this."

(see article below)

In the midst of all this, the respect for our flag and now, our national anthem is under attack. Certain Latino singers have apparently taken upon themselves, encouraged by British music producer Adam Kidron, to come out with a Spanish version of our national anthem! I have had to sit back and view our American flag flown upside down on a flagpole, with the Mexican flag flown over the American flag...sentiments expressed from protesters showing their loyalty to Mexico. Apparently they are confused to believe that Americans will favor their raucous behavior and disrespect toward our flag. I AM CERTAINLY ticked off when someone tries to alter our national anthem! Our national anthem has NEVER been reworded or translated into another language!

Part of the respect one shows for a particular country and its heritage, is the willingness to sing the national anthem of that country in the native tongue, and if you want to go further, learn about the meaning behind the song. It is a SLAP in the face of ALL Americans to ignore the English version and not try to learn the song in English!

Great, Great, Grandson of Francis Scott Key was not happy of course. In the words of Charles Key:

"I think it's despicable that somebody would go into our society from another country and change our national anthem!"

President Bush weighed in on the news saying, "The national anthem ought to be sung in English. People that want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English. And they ought to sing the national anthem in English."

(see article below)

Does President Bush see now why most Americans are not pleased with illegals disrespecting our culture? Many don't want to assimilate. If they did, this effort to push Spanish in our country wouldn't be so widespread. I will tell you now, our national anthem should be OFF LIMITS!

Another concern I have about the disrespect of this country by certain illegals and even some Latino leaders in this country is the outspoken rhetoric towards U.S. citizens. You may have seen these quotes floating around in emails, but if not, get ready for an awakening and a shock. They are authentic:

We remain a hunted people. Now you think you have a destiny to fulfill in this land that historically has been ours for forty thousand years, and we're a new Mestizo nation. And they want us to discuss civil rights. Civil rights! What law made by white men to oppress all of us of color, female and male! This is our homeland. We cannot, we will not, and we must not be made illegal in our own homeland. We are not im-mi-grants that came from another country to another country; we are migrants, free to travel the length and breadth of the Americas because we belong here. We are millions. We just have to survive. We have an aging white America. They are not making babies. They are dying. It's a matter of time. [laughter] The explosion is in our population. — José Angel Gutiérrez, former Associate Professor of Political Science, University of Texas at Arlington; comments at a Latino conference (Jan. 14, 1995)

It is an honor to be with the new leadership of the Americas, here meeting at UC Riverside. So with 187 on the ballot, what is it going to take for our people to vote, to see us walking into the gas ovens? It is electoral power that is going to make the determination of where we go as a community. And power is not given to you; you have to take it. Remember: 187 is the last gasp of white America in California. Understand that. And people say to me on the Senate floor when I was in the Senate, 'Why do you fight so hard for affirmative action programs?' And I tell my white colleagues, 'because you're going to need them' [laughter]. — Art Torres, formerly a member of the California State Assembly, State Senator. Currently California Democratic Party Chairman.

Go back to Simi Valley, you skunks! Go back to Woodland Hills! Go back to Boston! Go back to the Plymouth Rock, Pilgrims! Get out! We are the future. You're old and tired. Go on. We have beaten you; leave like beaten rats.

You old white people, it is your duty to die. Even their own ethicists say that they should die; that they have a duty to die. They're taking up too much space, too much air.

We are the majority in L.A. There's over seven million Mexicans in L.A. County alone. We are the majority. And you're going to see every day more and more of it, as we ... we manifest as our young people grow up, graduate from high school, go on to college and start taking over this society. Our people ... are ... the vast majority of our people are under the age of 15 years old. Right now we're already controlling those elections, whether it's through violence or nonviolence. Through love of having children we are gonna take over. — Augustine Cebeda, member of Brown Berets de Aztlan; comments in Westwood, California, 1996, at a 4th of July rally.

"California is going to be a Hispanic state. Anyone who doesn't like it should leave." — Mario Obledo, co-founder: Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund

Does this sound like a group of people who want to come and share the American dream?

We have allowed for so long, people to come into our country from Mexico illegally and now, America faces various problems due to a huge amount of illegals crossing the borders. Our efforts to do something about it is met with threats to take over the country in a sense. The above quotes should wake up this country to what we have been facing — the negative rhetoric continues to spew forth today.

America is the land of opportunity, but apparently others are looking at it as a piece of land to be taken back after years of discontent with their situation. Instead of using America's principles of prosperity and taking those same concerns to Mexico President Vincente Fox and placing emphasis on the implementation of those methods in Mexico, Latino leaders are negative toward the U.S. It's disturbing that we have had people in leadership positions in this country who think that way.

This great land, America, belongs to everyone. Everyone who would want to come here LEGALLY seeking a better life and contribute something back to society. America is not a free for all, to take and take.

So, I'm going to leave everyone with this... start respecting America and her traditions, or you can simply leave. Americans want neighbors who care about this great country and who will stand beside them and sing the national anthem with them, an anthem that brings us closer and makes us realize how much has been sacrificed to make the U.S. the blessed country it is today. Let's not take advantage or stain our heritage by twisting it into some other language. Just make the effort to learn English and assimilate! If you cannot do that, you are free to go elsewhere!
