Authorities arrested several employees Tuesday on immigration charges at a Chinese restaurant in Crescent Springs.

Federal, state and local authorities raided Empire Buffet as part of an investigation into a possible labor and human trafficking operation.

Investigators said they were trying to determine whether any of the workers were in this country illegally.

The restaurant was closed following the raid, and authorities declined to release any other information about the arrests or their investigation.

Villa Hills Traffic Stop Leads To Six Immigration Arrests
    Reported by: Jay Warren

Contributor: Candice Terrell Last Update: 10/17 12:24 am

A traffic stop in Villa Hills Tuesday led to six people being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

At least six people are now in federal custody.
A passenger in the van that was pulled over told a Villa Hills officer that one of the passengers was an illegal immigrant.

Federal agents were then called and five people in the car and a sixth person in a nearby home were taken into custody.

Villa Hills Police said the owners of the Empire Buffet restaurant in Crescent Springs housed as many as twelve people in their Woodway Drive home.

"We had complaints from neighbors due to the volume of people that were living in the property," said Villa Hills Det. Joe Schutzman.

Villa Hills Police said they stopped a van leaving the home bound for the Empire Buffet. Police said the van failed to stop at a stop sign and that's when they pulled it over.

Of the seven people inside the van, five were detained. Police then went back to the house on Woodway, were given consent to search, and found another suspected illegal immigrant sleeping.

"The restaurant itself was part of the overall investigation and I believe that a majority of the people that we had in the van obviously were employees," said Schutzman.

Villa Hills Police said they worked with federal authorities on the case long before the traffic stop.

A call to an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement spokesperson wasn't immediately returned on Tuesday.

Five men and one woman are now in federal custody.

The Empire Buffet was closed Tuesday after the arrests.
