Rhode Island legislators try again for curbs on illegals

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Two legislators whose effort to curb illegal immigration died during the last General Assembly session intend to introduce a revamped version of their bill.

The Rhode Island Taxpayer and Citizens Protection Act would tighten state laws governing driver’s licenses and criminalize efforts by businesses or individuals to harbor illegal immigrant workers.

The bill is co-sponsored in the House by Cranston’s Democratic representative Peter Palumbo in the Senate by Christopher Maselli, a Democrat from Johnston. The bill’s original version aimed solely at prohibiting companies from hiring or harboring undocumented immigrants.

It died during the last Assembly session, along with a package of some 36 other immigration-related measures.

Proposed legislation to curb illegal immigration has stirred opposition by immigrant advocacy groups, who argue that such legislation “will increase anti-immigrant fervor and division in Rhode Island.â€

Other groups include The Rhode Island Coalition of Immigrants and Refugees, the International Institute of Rhode Island and the Poverty Institute at Rhode Island College.
