PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A civil rights group has sued Rhode Island Gov. Don Carcieri for requiring that private businesses check the immigration status of new hires.

The state branch of the American Civil Liberties Union filed the lawsuit Wednesday in Superior Court.

Carcieri signed an order in March that requires state agencies and companies doing business with the state to use a federal database called E-Verify to check the immigration status of new hires.

Carcieri signed the order because he said the state is suffering from an influx of illegal immigrations.

The lawsuit accuses Carcieri of exceeding his constitutional authority by applying his order to private businesses. The ACLU also said the order conflicts with state purchasing laws.

A spokeswoman for Carcieri said she could not immediately comment on the lawsuit.
