PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - A janitorial contractor was sentenced Friday to three years probation and community confinement for hiring illegal immigrants.

Vincent D'Elia pleaded guilty in October to knowingly hiring the courthouse workers.Chief U.S. District Judge Mary Lisi ordered D'Elia to pay a $10,000 fine.

D'Elia must also spend two months in a federally run center, where he can only leave for work and be monitored by an ankle bracelet.

His company, Falcon Maintenance, was one of two whose workers were arrested during the raids. Prosecutors say all but five of his employees were illegal immigrants and many are now facing deportation.

PROVIDENCE — Before the summer of 2008, Vincent D’Elia Jr. was, to all outward appearances, a respected businessman. His company, Falcon Maintenance LLC, was prospering, and had contracts to clean the Newport courthouse and the traffic tribunal building in Cranston.

But it was all a façade, U.S. District Judge Mary Lisi said Friday.

“You can’t have true success without honor,â€
