TUCSON - Armed men confronted a group of illegal border crossers who were trekking through the desert this weekend hauling backpacks loaded with marijuana.

Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada says the bandits yelled at the smugglers in Spanish and told them to drop their load and run.

The Arizona Daily Star quoted Estrada on its Web site Monday as saying that the men fired guns into the air as they yelled and continued firing as the smugglers fled.

One man was shot in the forearm and another was grazed by a bullet. No one was killed.

Estrada says authorities weren't able to track down the bandits or find any marijuana.
