Mehlman: Illegals 'coming out' won't work
Chad Groening - OneNewsNow - 3/19/2010 6:15:00 AMAn immigration reform organization believes that illegal aliens' recent "coming out" demonstrations of demanding amnesty will ultimately backfire.

The protests took place in several cities, including Chicago, where dozens of illegal immigrants "came out" in order to demand that the government give amnesty to the estimated 12-million illegals living in the U.S. Those marches were merely a precursor to a planned demonstration in the nation's capital where tens of thousands of illegals and their supporters are expected to demonstrate on March 21.

Ira Mehlman, media director at the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), does not think illegal aliens calling attention to themselves will help their cause.

"Illegal aliens for years have been flouting the law and getting away with it, and it's becoming more brazen all the time," he comments. "Back in 2006, we were treated to the spectacle of hundreds of thousands of people coming out into the streets of just about every major American city and declaring, 'I'm here illegally, and if you don't give us what we want, we're going to do all sorts of things.'"

But Mehlman feels the American public made it very clear then that they were not going to give in to those demands. "The American people expect that people obey our laws and that people who are breaking our laws don't simply come out on the street and demand all sorts of benefits based on having broken our laws," he adds.

The FAIR media director believes the marches in 2006 had a direct impact on the failure of a 2007 bill that called for amnesty.
