Romney advocates 'self-deportation' for illegal immigrants

Romney advocates 'self-deportation' for illegal immigrants

    January 23, 2012, 7:37 p.m.

One way to solve the nation’s immigration problem, Mitt Romney suggested Monday evening, is through “self-deportation.”

The presidential candidate was replying to a question during the second hour of the NBC/National Journal debate in Tampa, Fla. It was the first of two debates in which the remaining four Republican candidates for president will have this week.

Romney was asked how he would reconcile his pledge that, as president, he wouldn't order mass deportations of undocumented immigrants with his promise to crack down on illegal immigration. His answer: “self-deportation.”

If the nation’s immigration laws are enforced Romney said, undocumented workers will return to their home countries once employment opportunities dry up.

Rick Santorum agreed. “It’s happening now. People are going back now,” he said.

The dialogue was part of a rapid-fire series of questions on issues involving immigration and Latinos. Both Romney and Newt Gingrich restated their opposition to the Democrats' Dream Act, which would put children of illegal immigrants on a path toward citizenship if they served in the military or finished college. Both candidates said they would support a version of the legislation that would provide some sort of reward for military service.

Children of illegal immigrants, Gingrich said, “should have same opportunity to join the American military and earn citizenship they would have had back home.”

The candidates were also asked whether English should be the official language of the United States and whether they opposed ballots being printed in Spanish in states such as Florida with large Latino populations.

Gingrich and Romney defended campaigning in Spanish, as they have done in the state, while supporting English as the official national language.

“I think campaigning, historically, you’ve always been willing to go to people on their terms in their culture,” Gingrich said. But, he said, “as a country, we have to unify ourselves in a future where there may be three or 400 languages” spoken.

“People need English to get great jobs,” Romney said. “We don’t want people limited in their capacity to reach the American dream because they don’t speak English.”

Ron Paul had a slightly different take, citing states' rights. He said he wouldn’t want the federal government to prevent a state such as Florida from printing ballots in Spanish.

“If Florida wanted to have some ballots in Spanish, I wouldn’t support a federal law that would prohibit Florida from accommodating a city or local or state election,” he said.

Romney on immigration: I'm for "self-deportation"

    By Lucy Madison

In Monday night's Republican presidential debate out of Florida, Mitt Romney described his plan for reducing the number of undocumented immigrants in the U.S.: "self-deportation."

The former Massachusetts governor was responding to a question about his immigration position by Adam Smith, the political editor at "The Tampa Bay Times," who said he was "confused" about his stance on deportation.

"Governor Romney, there is one thing I'm confused about. You say you don't want to go and round up people and deport them, but you also say that they would have to go back to their home countries and then apply for citizenship. So, if you don't deport them, how do you send them home?" Smith asked.
Romney said "we're not going to round people up" but rather, financially struggling undocumented immigrants would choose to return to their home countries of their own volition.

"The answer is self-deportation, which is people decide they can do better by going home because they can't find work here because they don't have legal documentation to allow them to work here," he said. "And so we're not going to round people up."

The former governor explained: "The way that we have in this society is to say, look, people who have come here legally would, under my plan, be given a transition period and the opportunity during that transition period to work here, but when that transition period was over, they would no longer have the documentation to allow them to work in this country. At that point, they can decide whether to remain or whether to return home and to apply for legal residency in the United States, get in line with everybody else. And I know people think but that's not fair to those that have come here illegally."

"Isn't that what we have now?" asked Smith, who pointed out that "If somebody doesn't feel they have the opportunity in America, they can go back any time they want to."

Romney suggested his administration would make it harder for illegal immigrants to get jobs, which would in turn lead them to seek work elsewhere.

"We'd have a card that indicates who's here illegally," he said. "And if people are not able to have a card, and have through an E-Verify system determine that they are here illegally, then they're going to find they can't get work here. And if people don't get work here, they're going to self-deport to a place where they can get work."

He said that then people could "get in line at home" and come to the country legally once they "reached the front of the line."

Earlier in the discussion, Romney said that, like Gingrich, he would support a version of legislation that would allow some young immigrants, brought to the country illegally, to earn citizenship by serving in the military.

"That's the same position that I have, and that is that I would not sign the DREAM Act as it currently exists, but I would sign the DREAM Act if it were focused on military service," Romney said, echoing Gingrich's stated position on the topic.

The issue of immigration is likely to play a huge factor this election in Florida, a diverse state with an increasingly large Hispanic population. In the Republican nomination contest, Gingrich has taken a softer position on the issue than his rival: the former speaker has favored granting amnesty to those who have lived in the country for a long time and have families here; Romney, on the other hand, has recently said such a policy would encourage illegal immigration.

What in the world is Mitt Romney talking about?!?!? At first it sounded good about getting illegal immigrants to self deport through the enforcement of our existing immigration laws, but then he starts talking about giving them some guest worker program and letting them decide if they want to leave or stay after a transition periods?

Excuse me, first off a big hell NO to any type of Guest Worker program to give the illegal aliens while promising Americans the program will ever end. We will never believe and never accept that.

Second, you don't establish enforcement credibility by allowing illegal aliens to have the law changed to accommodate them, giving them guest worker credentials, and then allowing them to decide what they want to do.

Illegal aliens do not get to decide what to do. We the people of American and Congress decides and we have already decided that illegal aliens are to be detected and deported when detected. That is the existing laws and it is not up to a President to autocratically decide what policy will or will not be!

Giving illegal alien invaders and occupiers military training in the US Armed services is currently against the law and it is a form of Treason for these men to discuss training and arming these invaders.

Technically, that is true. Practically though, it is not factual. The reason for that is there are thousands of foreigners in every Active Duty branch, plus they are even accepted into our Reserves, and even in our National Guard.

There are many Mexican citizens who come to the USA each summer for summer drill in the Guard and Reserve.

Yes, foreigners are allowed to join the US Military but illegal aliens inside the US are currently not allowed to join based on everything we have been told by the authorities over the years.

This would not be troubling if Mexico were not so fully infested with corruption, along with the entire culture. Them coming into our armories and having access to advanced weaponry and riot control training is not comforting to many more than jut me.
