Mitt Romney Appoints Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio to Presidential Campaign
    Wednesday, February 28, 2007

A controversial Arizona sheriff known for making his inmates wear pink underwear and eat green bologna turned his back on his state's favored presidential candidate, opting instead to join forces with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

The Romney camp appointed Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio Monday as honorary chair of the campaign in the state of Arizona, FOXNews.com has learned.

Arpaio has made his name with a tough stance on immigration, applying an anti-smuggling law to jail illegal immigrants in his county in a tent city. Inmates are forced to wear pink underwear and eat green bologna.

The Romney 2008 campaign also named Arizona political consultant Jason Rose as the state director of Romney's Republican bid for office.

"Each has many years of experience in Arizona politics and will help us mobilize our already robust network of grassroots support," said Romney in a statement. "They will be strong surrogates for our optimistic message of a stronger and safer America."

On Tuesday, a leaked Romney document revealed the candidate's strategy for positively framing his campaign against other Republican contenders such as Sen. John McCain of Arizona, a decorated war hero portrayed by the Romney camp as "too Washington," "too close to (Democratic) Left," and an "uncertain, erratic, unreliable leader in uncertain times."

Romney's on the fence about amnesty--his staff won't even discuss it. I'm sure Arpaio does not support amnesty, does he????

Hmmm.........sounds like Romney's attempting to add some crediability to his staff. I don't know where Sheriff Joe stands on amnesty, but he's certainly a "rule of law" kind of guy. IMO, Sheriff Joe Arpaio is to Arizona what Sheriff Buford Pusser was to Tennessee.

Hmmmm is right. This is curious. My fear is that Romney will be another Bush in terms of NAU. Has he said anything about that?

I really hope this isn't true. Why isn't he joining Tancredo or Hunter? Mitt is a flake and can't be trusted. He's just like BOOSH, a liberal in conservative clothing.

There was a disinformation effort earlier this year in which a fake article stating that Romney was a supporter of McCain Kennedy circulated on the internet. Romney is for legal enforcement of the existing laws and also favors green cards for foreign graduate students. Not the position most of us want but better than anyone poling as high as he is.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

What a blatant attempt at smoke and mirrors covering up his past actions.

Really, what a truly idiotic end run to cover his ass.

Hey, I'm only 48, but I did watch the movie with Joe Don Baker (Walking Tall).
