Romney says he will ‘replace and supersede’ Obama’s immigration plan
Romney says he will ‘replace and supersede’ Obama’s immigration plan
By Liz Goodwin, Yahoo! News | The Ticket – 8 mins ago...
Mitt Romney will criticize President Obama's immigration plan on Thursday, saying that as president, he will "put in place my own long-term solution that will replace and supersede the President's temporary measure," according to excerpts of his speech.
Romney's comments--which he will make Thursday afternoon in a speech to the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Annual Conference in Orlando, Fla.--suggest he would favor a path to legalization for young illegal immigrants who were brought to the country as children. But a release sent out by Romney's campaign only mentions that young illegal immigrants who decide to serve in the military should be given legal status.
In the speech, Romney also says he would make it easier for legal immigrants to bring their spouses and children to America, as well as beef up temporary work visas for low-skilled workers. He also reiterates that he thinks foreign students who get advanced degrees in America should be given green cards.
President Obama's bombshell immigration announcement on Friday has forced Romney to address immigration head-on, instead of just emphasizing the recession's impact on Latinos and reminding Latino audiences that Obama failed to pass immigration reform as he promised. Republicans and Romney surrogates have criticized the president's decision to stay the deportation of young illegal immigrants as political, but before Thursday, Romney had repeatedly refused to say whether he would repeal the policy if elected president. Instead he has criticized the move as being easily reversible and only offering a temporary solution. That's a big departure from Romney's rhetoric during the primary, when he said he would strengthen the enforcement of immigration laws so that millions of the country's illegal immigrants would "self deport."
Romney says he willNO AMNESTY
Don't reward the criminal actions of millions of illegal aliens by giving them citizenship.

Hopefully, before folks start bashing Romney saying that he is still too soft on immigration, we need to all realize that he is still waaayyyy better than another 4 years of Obama.
Calling an illegal alien an "undocumented worker" is like calling a drug dealer an "unlicensed pharmacist"........

Anyone who doesn't understand this, doesn't have a clue how to fix the US economy which is swamped with more people than jobs and more children than money to sustain them.
What a tragic disappointment these statements you made today have proven you to be. With these positions on the immigration issue, you have killed the enthusiasm you would have otherwise had for your candidacy.
It's now clear that Republicans in Congress and the States, not the White House, no matter who sits in the oval office, will have to solve this problem for the American people and the United States. So, give them your time and money this election, not fool-hardy idiots who think they can ride side-saddle into the White House.Last edited by Judy; 06-21-2012 at 02:17 PM.

But at least Romney won't push for Socialism like Obama will. I work hard, I put myself through college, I pay my taxes, and I pay my bills. if Obama stays, I will have to work even harder to pay OTHER people's bills. Socialism sucks. Romney will stick to the idea of Capitalism, and that, to me, is the building block of this great country.
I do agree we need to revamp welfare and food stamps. To receive welfare, i think a certain amount of time needs to be spent working for the state. Whether it's picking up litter, cleaning parks, etc.....and also welfare recipients need to be randomly tested for drugs and alcohol. If you test positive, you lose benefits for one year.
Food stamps need to be restricted for use for only healthy groceries and baby needs. No sodas, sugars, candy, etc. Yes, all of these rules impossible to enforce, I know.
And proof of residency through E-Verify to obtain any sort of government assistance.Calling an illegal alien an "undocumented worker" is like calling a drug dealer an "unlicensed pharmacist"........

Have you looked at the FairTax? FairTax | American for Fair Taxation | Tax Reform Solutions | Consumption Tax - Americans For Fair Taxation.
Romney has no plan to reduce welfare, at least not one that I've seen. He was running on creating jobs, but he can't create jobs for unemployed Americans while handing out green cards and visas to more immigrants and legal status to illegal aliens. 57% of all immigrants, legal and illegal, more than twice the rate of US citizens, are on at least 1 type of welfare program and most are on many programs.
A candidate who hasn't yet come out to support the FairTax while we're $16 trillion in debt under mandated income taxation, which Romney hasn't yet, but wants to increase immigration levels to fill job openings in the US which he did today while 25 million Americans are unemployed including many college graduates and graduates with advanced degrees, is NOT a capitalist, they're a globalist politician sucking foreign butt at the expense, harm and detriment of US citizens.Last edited by Judy; 06-21-2012 at 04:12 PM.

But Romney is still a better choice than Obama. And if too many Republicans sit at home on election day with their arms folded and refuse to vote, we're getting 4 more years of Obama. I agree that Republicans in Congress are who we have to lean on right now, regardless who gets elected, but if we start convincing Repubs to not vote for Romney, or not vote at all, we are screwed these next 4 years. Our number one goal, regardless, should be to get rid of Obama.
I do agree both are soft on immigration, but I would still rather have Romney in the White House than a President who currently has an illegal alien, drunk-driving uncle roaming our streets while nothing is being done about it. We ALL know if Bush or Reagan had an illegal alien, drunk-driving uncle here in the USA, the entire WORLD would be demanding his impeachment....Calling an illegal alien an "undocumented worker" is like calling a drug dealer an "unlicensed pharmacist"........

I had brought the idea of people on welfare do something for their money.to a governor of colorado several years ago and he said he had tried that, but the people who worked the parks etc, were upset as it as taking jobs and time away from their jobs. People who have great ideas need to do something our elected officials do not even consider and that is the unintended consequences of those ideas.

SORTING OUT WHAT ROMNEY SAID http://bit.ly/KL3ZWg
feel free to improve/prioritize the list. which do you think is the single most important?
will address the problem of illegal immigration in a civil but resolute manner
"will replace and supersede the president's temporary measure."
will prioritize efforts that strengthen legal immigration and make it more transparent and easier; will boost legal immigration. will make it easier for legal immigrants to bring their spouses and children to America
more non-citizens would be able to stay legally in the United States under Romney's plan because he would exempt from current numerical caps on green cards the spouses and minor children of green card holders.
will find a path to legal citizenship for any immigrant who serves in the U.S. military, and argued that visas ought to be automatic for science and technology students who come here to be educated
foreign students who get advanced degrees in America should be given green cards. "I'd staple a green card to the diploma of someone who gets an advanced degree in America,"
allow children who were brought here illegally by their parents to stay in the country under some circumstances?
expand temporary work visas for low-skilled workers http://bit.ly/dHjTcW
increase in border patrol agents http://1.usa.gov/KCm7XI
Border Apprehensions http://bit.ly/h0jNr3
completion of a high-tech fence on the Mexican border http://bit.ly/gjVCp9
national mandatory employment verification system http://bit.ly/gO6lYf
