FREMONT, Neb. (AP) - An attorney representing Fremont in a legal fight over a city ordinance that bans hiring or renting to illegal immigrants says the case could avoid a full trial.

A combined lawsuit led by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund is challenging the voter-approved ban as discriminatory. The case is to be heard in federal court in April.

The Fremont Tribune (http://bit.ly/yXASkt ) says the city's attorney, Kris Kobach, says both sides on Tuesday filed summary judgment motions, which would result in a judge ruling in the case before it goes to trial.

Kobach says it's "significant" because the case is regarded as a question of law, which makes it less likely there will be a full-fledged trial.
