Obama Immigration Plan

Despite possessing a Senate voting record conservative critics said places Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) among one of the most liberal legislators on Capitol Hill, the Democratic presidential candidate’s approach to dealing with illegal immigration is one even some border state Republicans could support.

In Sept. 2006, Obama voted to approve the Secure Fence Act, legislation requiring the construction of virtual and brick-and-mortar infrastructure to stop the tide of illegal immigrants coming over the U.S.-Mexico border.

The bill, which was authored by Rep. Peter King (R-NY), was supported by Republican congressmen in Texas, Nevada and California, including staunch conservative and strong immigration critic, Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.).
