Middletown — While localities across Virginia struggle with the costs and effects of illegal immigration — some passing tough local laws, others saying it’s a federal issue — Jill Holtzman Vogel made it clear on Thursday that this is the top issue of her campaign.

"It’s the No. 1 issue everywhere I go," the Republican state Senate candidate said during a gathering at the historic Wayside Inn. "Every house I go to, every person I talk with, illegal immigration is at the forefront of their concern."

Even Vogel, however, had to admit that anything she said couldn’t touch the compelling, fiery rhetoric of the evening’s guest speaker, film producer Ron Maxwell.

Maxwell, the director of "Gods and Generals" and "Gettysburg," and the producer of an upcoming documentary on the illegal immigration crisis, left the crowd of more than 100 Holtzman Vogel supporters with a prolonged standing ovation and gushing praise with his passionate and compassionate presentation.
