BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Federal Judge Sharon Lovelace Blackburn put the national immigration debate back in Alabama's court Wednesday, by upholding key parts of its tough new law aimed at illegal immigrants.

Blackburn rejected broad federal claims of authority and paved the way for Alabama to begin aggressive immigration law enforcement. The nation's media noted the significance with the New York Times reporting it means the debate over state laws against illegal immigration likely will move next to the US Supreme Court.

USA Today noted the judge's opinion represented the end of a 14-month losing streak for anti-illegal-immigration advocates from Arizona to Georgia.
