Rwandan woman convicted of immigration fraud

BOSTON - A Rwandan woman has been convicted of lying to immigration authorities about her "activities and associations during the Rwandan genocide" in order to remain in the U.S.


Prudence Kantengwa was convicted in federal court Monday of immigration document fraud, visa fraud, perjury during testimony before an immigration judge and obstruction of administrative proceedings.


Sentencing is scheduled for July 31.



Prosecutors say in 2004, when the 47-year-old Kantengwa entered the U.S., she possessed and used a non-immigrant visa she had fraudulently obtained by providing false information she submitted with her application. Prosecutors also say she provided false information in her application for asylum.


She’s the sister of Beatrice Munyenyezi, who faces trial in New Hampshire. Prosecutors say she lied about her role in the genocide to gain U.S. citizenship.
