Immigration bill moving forward

House takes up debate this week as legislators try to make good on promise to governor
GENERAL ASSEMBLY
The General Assembly’s major immigration package is expected to cross an important hurdle this week when it is debated on the House floor.
When the legislative session began three weeks ago, lawmakers pledged to send an immigration bill to Gov. Mark Sanford within the first two months. It appears they will hit that target if the House approves the most popular of the pending bills.
The bill has wide support within the Republican-controlled Legislature. Those who oppose it are Democrats, but they don’t have enough votes to hold it up.
The Senate approved a similar version of the bill last year.
Sanford also wants quick action on an immigration package, but the bills working their way through the General Assembly include a provision the governor has said he does not like: They would allow state law to pre-empt local government immigration ordinances.
The governor will take a wait-and-see approach when a bill is finally approved by both the House and Senate, Sanford spokesman Joel Sawyer said.

Those on the other side of the debate question motives, saying racism is fueling the fire. They also caution against alienating people, especially Hispanics who make up the majority of the state’s fast-growing immigrant population
Does this guy realize that this "fast growing immigrant population" of his is a fast growing population of illegal aliens?
They are people who do not belong here. They have no right to be here. Because they are illegal aliens they should be alienated....that's the whole purpose of the law!!Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

Yes, they've learned that if they cry "racism", Americans will back down. Not anymore, buddy! They are breaking our laws, and there is no exuse for it.

This bill only targets employers with state contracts, any company with under a 1000 employees gets a free pass for the illegals they hire. It will have no effect whatsoever in the construction industry.
This reporter, Noelle Phillips surprises me here because she says illegal immigrants, she usually calls them immigrants or undocumented immigrants. She was in court for my case Friday and she sat next to the homeowner I protested the entire time. Never asked me one question.

Immigration | House gives bill key approval
Measure would crack down on businesses hiring illegal immigrants
By NOELLE PHILLIPS
The S.C. House gave key approval Wednesday to a bill that lawmakers hope will curb illegal immigration in the state.
The bill includes 15 provisions, such as penalizing businesses that hire illegal immigrants and making smuggling illegal immigrants into the state a felony.
It received majority approval from the Republican-controlled House, and is expected to pass its final vote today. The bill will then move to the Senate.
The Senate approved a similar version last year and now will address differences between the two. The General Assembly wants to give Gov. Mark Sanford an immigration bill by mid-February.
Opponents said the bill did not include strong enough enforcement to stop the flow of illegal immigrants into South Carolina.
House Speaker Bobby Harrell, R-Charleston, said the bill has teeth because it would require the S.C. Law Enforcement Division to sign an agreement with the Department of Homeland Security that would allow its agents to carry out federal immigration laws
