South Carolina Senate candidate Weston Newton laid out five ways he believes the state can address illegal immigration Tuesday in a news release.

The five points of his plan are as follows:

• Making the state require employers holding state contracts and subcontracts to verify the legal status of their employees.

• Sanction companies that knowingly hire illegal immigrants.

• Encourage newcomers to embrace local culture and learn English.

• Provide law enforcement agencies tools needed to work with federal officials to enforce existing immigration laws.

• Require the verification of residence before a driver's license is obtained or before state services can be accessed.

In the release, Newton said he "will push for common-sense legislation that will deal with the increasing problem of illegal immigration in South Carolina."

Four Republican candidates for the Senate District 46 seat will face off in a primary on May 1. The other candidates are: state Rep. Catherine Ceips, R-Beaufort; state Rep. Richard Chalk, R-Hilton Head Island and former Beaufort County Council chairman Tom Taylor.
