    S. D.: ICE Arrests IA Driver Who Crashed - 6 IA's Killed

Looks like this driver could be a teenager! At any rate, 8 IA's got away...and we have to pay the hospital bills for the ones who were injured! I just want to know how many are getting through every single day...I heard as many as 10,000/day make it without getting caught. I just know that L.A. is bulging at the seams...more now than EVER!

Federal immigration officials say they have arrested a driver who flipped his sport utility vehicle into a canal outside San Diego, killing six, while transporting at least 20 illegal Mexican immigrants.

One of the survivors, a 12-year-old girl, saw her parents and 8-year-old brother die in the crash, said Lauren Mack, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The driver, a Mexican national, was arrested on suspicion of smuggling illegal immigrants, Mack said. He was taken into custody in Brawley on Sunday by federal agents, and his name and age were not released because he may be a juvenile, she said.
He was spotted driving a GMC Yukon with the lights out about midnight Friday by police in Westmorland, about 125 miles east of San Diego, Mack said. Westmorland police tried to stop the SUV, but the driver sped out of sight, she said.

Officers found the SUV overturned in a canal at Andre and Garvey roads, Mack said.

Eight or nine additional passengers had fled the crash scene by the time police arrived, Mack said.
Police took four injured passengers to Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley. Agents held three others as witnesses and turned five more over to border patrol agents, who plan to return them to Mexico, Mack said.

EL CENTRO, Calif. — A Mexican citizen accused of driving a sport utility vehicle into a canal, killing six illegal immigrants, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to smuggling charges.

Alejandro Toribio Gama, who his attorney said is probably a juvenile, balanced himself on crutches as the brief proceedings in federal court were translated into Spanish, according to the Imperial Valley Press. He was arrested Sunday at a hotel near the crash.

His court-appointed attorney, Diane Regan, said she suspected Toribio may be 15 or 16 years old. A hearing was scheduled Friday to determine his age.

The GMC Suburban crashed Friday night in Westmorland, about 125 miles east of San Diego, with about 20 people inside, according to U.S. and Mexican authorities.

Among the survivors was a 12-year-old girl whose father, mother and younger brother died in the crash. Mexican authorities said the brother was 10; the California Highway Patrol said he was 8.

The family of four was from San Pablo, a village in central Mexico. The family had planned to join relatives in Los Angeles, said Francisco Torres, head of citizen protection at the Mexican Consulate in Calexico. They also had relatives in Alabama.

The girl planned Tuesday to return to her village, where her parents and brother will be buried, Torres said.

The family crossed on foot in the Imperial Sand Dunes, Torres said, a favorite spot for off-road vehicle enthusiasts. They were picked up along Interstate 8, which connects San Diego and Phoenix.
