Two candidates eye Whitfield sheriff post

DALTON, Ga. — Whitfield County’s incumbent sheriff says he has more to accomplish, while his Republican challenger says 16 years as sheriff is enough.

Sheriff Scott Chitwood, a Democrat, has served as the county’s top cop since 1993 and is challenged by GOP nominee Claude Nix, who is seeking his first elected office.

The Times Free Press posed two questions to the candidates: Why should people vote for you as sheriff? Why do you want to be sheriff?

Mr. Chitwood said he deserves the public’s vote because he is the most qualified for the office.
