Border Patrol seizes cash near checkpoint

Border Patrol agents seized $29,000, believed to be profits from drug sales, from a Nissan Altima that was stopped this week near the Interstate 5 Border Patrol checkpoint in San Onofre.

Border Patrol agents stopped the southbound car about 2 p.m. Wednesday. During a canine check, a dog alerted and the money was found in seven separate bundles in a hidden compartment in the car's center console.

The driver, a Mexican citizen, was arrested and turned over to agents from Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, the Border Patrol said.
