SAN DIEGO -- Twenty-one people were arrested today as officers from the San Diego Police Department and other agencies served warrants on alleged gang members suspected of assaults, robberies and drug trafficking, the San Diego Police Department said.

Dubbed Operation Stampede, the investigation has led to the discovery of 30 weapons that were destined to be sold to criminals in Mexico, police said. Also found were a ballistic vest and numerous rounds of ammunition.

Suspects in three murders have been arrested, including the gunning down of 14-year-old Javier Quirez in August 2007, police said.

Since the undercover investigation began in December, 31 people have been arrested.
