SAN DIEGO -- A 32-year-old man was killed late Thursday night when he ran into traffic while fleeing a U.S. Border Patrol agent, authorities said.
The man had been driving an Chevrolet Astro van westbound on Interstate 8 near Alpine when a Border Patrol agent pulled over the van on suspicion of immigrant smuggling at about 10:20 p.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Penning said.
When the van stopped, a passenger and the driver got out and began running. The agent ran after the driver, who tried to escape by running across the freeway. He was struck by a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica driven by a 69-year-old woman from Murrietta, Calif., Penning said.
The van driver died on impact. The driver of the Pacifica and her two passengers were not hurt.
The passenger who fled from the van was not apprehended, Penning said.Support our FIGHT AGAINST illegal immigration & Amnesty by joining our E-mail Alerts at https://eepurl.com/cktGTn

Authorities release name of man struck and killed while fleeing Border Patrol agents
By: North County Times wire services -
SAN DIEGO - Authorities Saturday released the name of a man struck and killed by a vehicle in rural East County as he ran from U.S. Border Patrol agents who suspected him of smuggling illegal immigrants into the United States.
The county Medical Examiner's Office identified the 32-year-old man as Jose Trinidad Calderon, of San Diego.
Calderon died from multiple blunt force injuries caused when the vehicle struck him, a medical investigator said.
Calderon was driving a Chevrolet Astro van on westbound Interstate 8 near Tavern Road when the agents pulled him over sometime before 10:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
When the van stopped, the driver and several passengers jumped out and ran away, CHP Officer Brian Pennings said.
A Border Patrol agent ran after Calderon until he darted onto the freeway lanes, right into the path of a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica traveling at approximately 70 miles per hour, he said.
The Pacifica struck Calderon, killing him. None of the Chrysler's occupants were hurt, Pennings said.
It was not immediately clear whether any of passengers who fled the Astro van were apprehended.Support our FIGHT AGAINST illegal immigration & Amnesty by joining our E-mail Alerts at https://eepurl.com/cktGTn
