The justices decide which cases they will hear, about 80 each year. They decide another 50 without hearing arguments. The cases they choose usually address constitutional issues or federal law. The Supreme Court gets about 7,000 requests to hear cases per year, so there are many cases that don't get heard.

We've got a real problem in this country with court shopping. The ACLU and other liberal special interest groups know exactly where to file their lawsuits for the initial desired outcome. While many of these initial rulings can be overcome through the appeals process, it can be a lengthy process.
