Kansas Rep. Vern Peck suggests shooting illegal immigrants like pigs.

Republican Vern Peck, member of the Kansas House of Representatives, shocked colleagues and others Monday when he suggestd on the House floor that illegal immigrants should be shot like feral pigs.

During a meeting of the Kansas House Appropriations Committee Rep. Vern (Virgil) Peck said "if shooting these immigrating feral hogs works, maybe we have found a solution to our illegal immigration problem."

At the time of the unfortunate remark the committee was debating whether to try to control the wild hog population by using gunmen in helicopters.

The remark drew gasps from the audience and other lawmakers. Peck was first defiant when told that his remarks were offensive and inappropriate. Later Peck tried to assure others that the statement was really all just a joke, and claimed that he "was just speaking like a southeast Kansas person."

A national Hispanic Republican advocacy group called Somos Republicans released a statement condemning Peck's remark:

We are horrified by his remarks. If Representative Virgil Peck does not apologize for his extremist comments, he will wind up permanently on our unfriendly to Hispanics list for the rest of his life, and his Kansas legend will be one of bigotry.

By Tuesday Kansas Governor Sam Brownback (R) was also calling for Peck to apologize. And Peck responded by offering a brief apology for his insensitive and ill conceived "joke."

"I do not believe that is an appropriate statement to make," Governor Brownback said when questioned by The Topeka Capital-Journal at the Statehouse. "I think it's completely inappropriate. I'm from southeast Kansas," Brownback said. "I disagree with that statement."
