Freedom may be a thing of beauty, but sometimes the process of freedom may not be so beautiful.

“You don’t like it here? Get the hell outta here (racial slur),” said one person protesting On the front steps of the Houston City Hall.

The protest and words said are evidence of the underlying frustration surrounding the immigration debate.

Tuesday’s rally was organized by the Houston Police Patrolmen’s Union.

The recent death of Houston Police Officer Rodney Hohnson, allegedly at the hands of an illegal felon from Mexico prompted HPD to speed up changes to its immigration policy.

“You have to arrest them. Then you ask about immigration status,” said Johnnie McFarland who is the president of HPPU.

Officers still can’t inquire about the immigration status of someone they haven’t arrested.

“We definitely have a don’t ask don’t tell policy. We need all the intelligence and information we can get about people that are here,” said McFarland.

But it’s not that simple according to Houston Mayor Bill White. “It’s not a crime. It’s not a violation of federal or state law to be in the state without documentation.”

“We believe law enforcement should be given the right to inquire about someone’s immigration status prior to the arrest,” said Curtis Collier with U.S. Border Watch.

Some, however, see it another way.

“We believe that will make immigrants fear police. They pay taxes and are entitled to police services,” said Maria Jimenez a longtime social justice activist.

Public safety, Jimenez said, without distinction.

Illegal immigrants should fear police. They shouldn't be paying taxes or be entitled to social services.

If we hadn't profiled after Pearl was attacked, we would have lost the war to spies. These illegals could be considered spies.

I suspect that some of the companies that hire the illegals and know that the SS#'s don't match, give them pay stubs that say they have paid some amount of Federal Tax but don't submit the taxes and just pocket the money. There is also the issue of just paying sales tax and thinking thats all you owe.

Are these people insane? Many of them already bring their prejudice view of the police from their homeland. The police in Mexico, Central American and some South American countries are corrupt and many think it is the same here.
Women in domestic violence know the law very well. If they are illegal and get beaten, if they call the police they came stay for up to 2 yaers and can apply for a green card for themselves and their kids. I don't think they would have a problem going to the police.

It IS against the law to be in this country illegally, yet this "Mayor" is inexplicably using semantics to defend illegals in Houston.

Officer Johnson was not murdered by a U.S. citizen lacking documentation, he was not murdered by one of those elusive voters that can't seem to obtain a valid ID (even when it's free) . HE WAS MURDERED, IN COLD BLOOD, BY AN ILLEGAL ALIEN!!

Is that spit I see Mr. Mayor, that you have left on Officer Johnsons grave?
